Much of the music production world was saddened in November 2017, when all Cakewalk products’ development officially stopped. Gibson wanted to invest its dollars more completely on consumer audio devices.
Enter BandLab, the company that recently acquired all intellectual property regarding Cakewalk. The Sonar digital audio workstation is now titled Cakewalk by BandLab, and is currently a free download for anyone who wants it.
To get the software, you need to create a free account at BandLab. Naturally, they want to capitalize on their investment, so new uses of their current offerings is more than welcome. Once you’ve created an account, there’s a banner atop the site that leads you to the BandLab Assistant download; at that point, it’s only a couple more clicks and Cakewalk will download and install.
For those who have been using Cakewalk for a long time, they won’t have to learn a new DAW. The company also claims to have a lot of updates planned for the near future. The downside to making it free is the few features that needed to be licensed are no longer included; for example, Melodyne Essentials. If you already own it, you can still take advantage of the integration; if you don’t own it, you’ll have to purchase it separately.
Cakewalk is a serious piece of software. There’s no better time to get into music production for free!
